How solunar theory works

First described by John Alden Knight in 1926, solunar theory holds that fish and game feed most actively when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (the major periods) and at moonrise and moonset (the minor periods). Activity climbs near the new and full moon and peaks when a period coincides with dawn or dusk.

  • 2 major periods — moon overhead & underfoot, ~2 hours each.
  • 2 minor periods — moonrise & moonset, ~1 hour each.
  • Day rating — strongest at new & full moon, plus a dawn/dusk bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a solunar forecast? +

A solunar forecast predicts when fish and game are most likely to feed, based on the moon’s position. Each day has two major periods (moon overhead and underfoot, ~2 hours) and two minor periods (moonrise and moonset, ~1 hour).

When are the best times to fish or hunt? +

During the major and minor periods — especially when one overlaps sunrise or sunset, and around the new and full moon when feeding activity peaks.

Is Solunar free? +

Yes. Every location and date is free, with no account required.

How accurate are the times? +

Sun and moon times are computed astronomically for your exact coordinates and time zone. Solunar theory itself is a traditional guide to activity, not a guarantee — weather, water, and pressure still matter.
